Maison Lecan presents this wheel-thrown stoneware owl by Alfred Berger, a ceramicist born in Strasbourg in 1945. It is a thrown cylinder, open at the top, with two large ringed eyes and a beak applied by hand. The dark brown glaze runs down the body and lets the throwing marks show through. The eyes are glazed separately, in coppery tones.
Alfred Berger entered the École des Arts décoratifs in Strasbourg in 1962. There he studied ceramics under Frédéric Watteel and modelling under Jean Henninger, and went on to earn the CAFAS. In the 1960s and 1970s he exhibited at the Bartholdi Museum in Colmar, the Maison des Métiers d'Art Français in Paris and the Salon des Arts du Feu in Vallauris. His work was shown permanently in galleries in Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Saint-Dié.
The owl is unsigned, but Alfred Berger himself has confirmed it is his work.
Very good condition, with a small chip on the lower rim.
